How to Examine Your Breasts - Allied Medical Center
About the Breast Self-Exam

Ready to Start Your Breast Self-Exam?

Taking a few minutes each month to understand your body can save your life. We will guide you through the 3 simple check steps: Visual, Physical, and Nipple palpation. Let's begin.

Visual Check
Inspect posture variations looking directly into a lit mirror to register natural contours.

Visual Check

Steps 1 & 2 • Mirror Inspection
How to do it correctly

Ensure you examine your breasts in three positions: with arms relaxed at your sides, with hands pressed firmly on your hips (to flex your chest muscles), and with arms raised overhead. This reveals contour shifts that might otherwise stay hidden.

  • Check both breasts in a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips.
  • Look for changes in breast shape, size, skin texture, or nipple appearance.
  • Raise your arms high overhead and look for the same visual changes.
  • Report any skin dimpling, puckering, or unusual contour changes immediately.

Physical Check

Steps 3 & 4 • Palpation Guide
How to do it correctly

Use the flat, sensitive pads of your three middle fingers—not the fingertips. Move in a circular, spiral pattern starting from the outside edge and moving inwards. Apply light, medium, and deep pressure at each spot to feel different layers of tissue.

  • Use the pads of your 3 middle fingers to examine your entire breast tissue.
  • Move in a circular pattern, covering from the collarbone to the cleavage line.
  • Examine under your armpits for any swelling, thick lumps, or lymph nodes.
  • Ensure you feel both the surface skin and the deeper layers of tissue.

Nipple Check

Step 5 • Targeted Examination
How to do it correctly

Place your fingers on opposite sides of the nipple and apply gentle pressure inward to inspect for any scaling, crusting, or unexpected retraction. Never squeeze forcefully; a gentle check is all that is required.

  • Gently examine your nipples for any sudden scaling, crusting, or peeling.
  • Check for nipple inversion, flattening, or retraction into the breast tissue.
  • Watch out for any spontaneous fluid or nipple discharge.
  • Lying down or checking in the shower with soapy skin makes detection easier.
When to See a Breast Specialist
• breast lump or thickening • Nipple discharge • Skin dimpling or swelling • Persistent breast pain • Lump or swelling in the armpit
Self-Examination Is Not a Substitute for Screening
Breast self-examination is important, but it does not replace regular mammograms, breast ultrasound, or professional breast assessments. Routine breast screening remains the most effective way to detect breast cancer early.

WHEN TO SCREEN

When Should You Start
Breast Screening?

Early breast cancer screening improves the chances of early detection and successful treatment. Your screening plan should be based on your age, family history, and individual risk factors.

Average Risk (Age 40+)

Annual 3D mammography is recommended from age 40 for women at average risk.

Family History of Breast Cancer

Earlier screening may be recommended if you have a strong family history of breast cancer.

BRCA Gene Mutations

Women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations may require earlier screening with 3D mammography and Breast MRI.

New Breast Symptoms

Seek prompt assessment for breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, skin changes, or breast swelling.

Dense Breast Tissue

Women with dense breasts may benefit from breast ultrasound alongside routine mammography.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should book a Comprehensive Breast Screening in Dubai?

Our breast screening services are highly recommended for women aged 40 and above seeking annual proactive monitoring. Additionally, women under 40 with a family history of breast cancer, positive genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2), or personal health concerns can benefit from customized early detection protocols.

How should I prepare for a Mammogram or Breast Ultrasound?

To ensure optimal clarity during your 3D mammography or ultrasound scan, please do not apply deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your appointment, as these can create shadow spots. We recommend wearing a comfortable two-piece outfit.

How long does a complete Breast Care assessment take?

A standard screening mammogram or breast ultrasound scan usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. If you undergo a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation (incorporating 3D tomosynthesis, targeted ultrasound, and a consultation with our female breast radiologist), the complete assessment is typically wrapped up within 1 to 2 hours, including same-day report briefings.

Is there a radiation risk with 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis)?

Our state-of-the-art 3D Mammography technology utilizes low-dose radiation protocols that are fully optimized to ensure patient safety. The radiation dose is minimal, roughly equivalent to a few weeks of natural background environmental exposure. Diagnostic breast ultrasounds and Breast MRI scans are completely radiation-free.

Are breast screening and diagnostic services covered by insurance in the UAE?

Coverage for routine screening and diagnostic breast imaging varies depending on your insurance provider and network tier. We accept a wide range of leading UAE health insurance networks, including Daman, AXA/GIG, NAS, NextCare, and Allianz. Our clinical team can verify your eligibility and pre-approval options prior to booking.

What happens if a change or abnormality is found during my breast screening?

If any unusual tissue density or microcalcifications are spotted, our specialist female breast radiologist will guide you through immediate next steps. This may include a high-definition targeted ultrasound, Breast MRI, or a minimally invasive biopsy. We provide a supportive, seamlessly integrated care path linked with leading surgeons and oncologists.

Do you offer corporate breast health awareness and screening programs?

Yes, we partner with corporate organizations across Dubai and the wider UAE to deliver tailor-made breast health education, preventative health workshops, and wellness screening packages. We customize wellness solutions to align with corporate health goals, offering both on-site workshops and clinical appointment packages.
