The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. As one of the biggest hormone-producing glands in the human body, it is essential for healthy body function.

Sometimes the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, which can slow down all of your body functions. This condition is called hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid. Other times, the thyroid can be overactive and produce excess hormones, a condition called hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is more common than hyperthyroidism. While hyperthyroidism is curable in most cases, 95% of hypothyroid patients need lifelong treatment. With early diagnosis and treatment, thyroid hormone replacement is a safe and effective treatment that can manage your symptoms and prevent complications.

Symptoms of thyroid disease are wide-ranging and may affect your mood, body temperature, weight etc.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism include:

  • Lack of energy
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal sensitivity to cold temperatures
  • Muscle cramps and stiffness
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Joint pain
  • Hair loss
  • Depression
  • Hoarseness or husky voice
  • Enlarged thyroid gland
  • Brittle fingernails
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Infertility

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism include:

  • Insomnia
  • Sweating
  • Dramatic emotional swings
  • Tremors

Thyroid function tests are a series of blood tests used to measure how well your thyroid gland is working. If your thyroid function test suggests that your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, an ultrasound test may be ordered.

Thyroid ultrasound will check for structural problems with the thyroid gland, thyroid gland activity, and any nodules that may be causing problems. Based on the findings, the radiologist may recommend fine needle aspiration (biopsy) of the thyroid nodule to:

  • make a diagnosis of a thyroid nodule
  • help select therapy for a thyroid nodule
  • drain a cyst that may be causing pain
  • inject a medication to shrink a recurrent cyst

If the scan is normal, your physician will likely prescribe medication to regulate your thyroid activity or further treatment options will be discussed.
